Ontario Investing in Video Surveillance Systems in Windsor
Funding for new equipment and improved technology will enhance local police efforts to prevent crime, especially gun and gang violence.
Windsor — The Ontario government is investing $200,000 dollars to help the Windsor Police Serviceto expand its video surveillance systems and better protect the community against crime and the threat of gun and gang violence.
Funding is being delivered through the Ontario CCTV Grant Program and will be used to replace outdated equipment, expand or enhance current technology, and install new or additional CCTV surveillance cameras in areas where gun and gang violence and correlated crimes, such as drug and human trafficking, are most prevalent.
“Criminals targeting Forest Glade, East Windsor, Fontainebleau, Walkerville, Ford City and Riverside have been identified and charged thanks to existing CCTV surveillance systems in our community,” notes Windsor—Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie. “The Province’s investment in updates and new additions to our CCTV technology, supported by Premier Doug Ford and Solicitor General Michael Kerzner, is truly welcome news, and will support the efforts of the Windsor Police Service to deter would-be criminals from coming into our neighbourhoods.”
“Our government is determined to provide police services with the tools and resources they need to keep Ontarians safe,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “CCTV surveillance systems are an important part of local police work to detect, prevent, and deter criminal activity, especially in areas of gun and gang violence and other serious crimes.
“As Mayor and Chair of the Windsor Police Services Board, community safety has always been a top priority. This $200,000 investment will provide substantial support to the Windsor Police Service by expanding our Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems to deter criminal activity related to gun and gang violence and improve public safety. Thank you to Doug Ford and the Ontario Government for helping us create safer streets for everyone in our community.” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Launched in August 2020, the Ontario CCTV Grant program is part of Ontario’s Guns, Gangs and Violence Reduction Strategy and represents a $6 million investment across the province over three fiscal years, from 2020-2021 to 2022-2023. The Windsor Police Service is one of 20 police services across the province to receive a grant for 2022-23.
