Funding will help firefighters at Windsor Fire and Rescue Services stay safe while on the job
WINDSOR— As part of its plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, the Ontario government is supporting firefighters at Windsor Fire and Rescue Services by investing $119,211 through the Fire Protection Grant. The funding will be used to purchase a bunker gear washer extractor, bunker gear dryer cabinet, an SCBA air fill compressor, and additional personal protective gear. This equipment will help ensure firefighters have access to clean, safe gear, reducing exposure to harmful contaminants and allowing them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
“Our firefighters risk their lives every day to protect our community, and it’s vital they have the tools to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh. “This Fire Protection Grant will provide Windsor Fire and Rescue Services with essential equipment—including clean gear systems, an SCBA air fill compressor, and additional protective gear—helping reduce health risks and enhance safety when it matters most.”
This funding will support eligible projects including:
- Equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment that enhance municipal cancer prevention initiatives
- Equipment and supplies for lithium-ion battery incident response
- Minor infrastructure upgrades and modernization, including enhanced broadband and internet connectivity
“Firefighters are always there when we need them, running towards danger to protect our homes and our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “That is why we’re doubling this year’s Fire Protection Grant, giving even more firefighters across the province the tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.”
“Windsor Fire and Rescue Services brave and selfless firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting ours, and we certainly thank them for their invaluable service to our community,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “Our thanks also go to the Government of Ontario, Premier Ford, Solicitor General Kerzner, and MPP Dowie. This latest investment from the province will go a long way towards protecting firefighters on the job and bringing a greater peace of mind to their loved ones when they head out to respond to calls.
“Cancer is one of the most serious occupational challenges our firefighting profession faces,” said James Waffle, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services Chief. “This provincial investment demonstrates a meaningful commitment to prevention, awareness, and firefighter health, and we sincerely thank the provincial government for supporting Windsor Fire and Rescue Services and firefighters across Ontario.”
This year’s Fire Protection Grant will support all 380 municipal fire services in Ontario, helping the approximately 33,000 firefighters who protect Ontario and keep our communities safe.
