Statement by MPP Andrew Dowie on SafePoint Consumption and Treatment Services

News February 17, 2023

Windsor ― Andrew Dowie, Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor—Tecumseh is aware of the various news reports surrounding the SafePoint Consumption and Treatment Services site.  MPP Dowie is also aware that Windsor-Essex County Health Unit officials have been engaging with members of the civil service at Ministry of Health for several months to secure necessary approvals and funding for delivery of these services.

To date, no officials representing the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, nor the City of Windsor, have engaged with MPP Dowie regarding this application.  MPP Dowie has, however, through his own initiative, engaged with and has received information from the Ministry of Health regarding the status of the application and is not aware of any concerns or delays.

MPP Dowie has strongly advocated for and will always strongly advocate for provincial health services to remain accessible and available to our residents, and particularly for our designated local priorities such as the SafePoint site.  Wherever there can be a beneficial conversation to help accelerate the release of approvals and funding in the provincial government, MPP Dowie will make that engagement.

For background, the Application Guide for the site and criteria to be demonstrated locally to secure provincial funding approval can be found here.  https://health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/opioids/docs/CTS_application_guide_en.pdf
